The Evolution of the Bra: 100 Years and We’re Still Adjusting the Straps!!!!

Ladies, we need to discuss the bra.

This little piece of engineering has been holding women together — quite literally — for generations. And apparently, every decade looked at the bra and thought, “You know what this needs? More complications.”

Back in the early 1900s, women were stuffed into corsets so tight I’m fairly certain breathing was considered an optional activity.

Then came the 1920s, when bras were designed to flatten everything. Because apparently having breasts was briefly considered terribly inconvenient.

By the 1950s, we got the famous bullet bra.

Nothing says femininity quite like breasts capable of pointing out the nearest emergency exit.

Then the 1960s and ’70s arrived and women decided to loosen things up. Bras became softer and more natural. Some women even burned them.

I completely understand the sentiment.

The 1990s gave us the push-up bra, when suddenly the goal was to take everything we had and relocate it approximately six inches north.

Then came padded bras.

Underwire bras.

T-shirt bras.

Strapless bras.

Convertible bras.

Sports bras.

Bras that promised to minimize.

Bras that promised to maximize.

Bras that claimed they could lift, separate, smooth, shape and possibly file your taxes.

And now?

We’ve reached our 60s and have finally discovered the greatest advancement in bra technology:

COMFORT.

Give me soft fabric. Give me wide straps. Give me something without a piece of metal attempting to puncture a lung.

And if I get home at 5:00?

That bra is coming OFF before my shoes.

A hundred years of innovation and apparently the perfect bra is still the one you can’t wait to remove.

Progress. 😂
